The pulmonologist deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. Various factors may be responsible for their formation, including pathogens, genetic and environmental conditions. Most often they result in temporary or irreversible limitation of respiratory efficiency.
What are lung diseases?
Lung diseases are a very diverse group. They can be inflammatory, caused by environmental or neoplastic factors. Some of them are genetically determined. There are also lung conditions with unknown causes, such as sarcoidosis. Among the best known and most common lung diseases are:
- pneumonia, e.g. environmentally acquired (caused mainly by pneumococci), atypical (caused by atypical pathogens such as chlamydia, mycoplasmas), aspiration (due to
- swallowing or vomiting disorders), necrotic (caused by anaerobic pathogens),
COPD, which is a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease consisting of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, - pulmonary tuberculosis,
- pneumoconiosis,
- lung cancer – ranks first and third in terms of cancer incidence in men and women, respectively. They are the most common cause of cancer death in both sexes.
