The British Lung Foundation funds a broad range of research which aims to tackle lung disease, spending over £1 million on medical research grants each year. To date, the BLF has awarded over £21 million in research grants. Details of research that we have supported previously.
Under the current awards system, announcements regarding the availability of grants are made throughout the year, as and when funding is secured.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Awards 2011-2012
The British Lung Foundation is offering funding for research into Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Principal applicants must be based in the UK. Two award types are available:
1. IPF Pilot Study Grant
A grant of £140k is available to fund pilot trials to investigate the benefits (if any) of using warfarin, omeprozole and/or thalidomide in IPF. The funded study should look at the potential benefits of warfarin, omeprozole and thalidomide as separate interventions in IPF and/or in combination.The Grant is available either to medically qualified applicants, post-doctoral scientists or allied health professionals. 2. Targeted IPF Project Grant
A grant of £120k is available to fund research into IPF. Any area of IPF research is eligible. The Grant is available either to medically qualified applicants, post-doctoral scientists or allied health professionals for clinical, laboratory and/or epidemiological research into Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (including palliative care or psycho-social studies). Burrow Hill Training Fund Awards 2011-2012
The British Lung Foundation invites applications for Burrow Hill Training Fund awards. Applicants must be based in the UK. Three award types are available, please refer to the application guidelines for full details.

1. Burrow Hill Vocational Training Grant
Grants of up to £1,000 available to provide assistance with vocational training for ex-members of the Armed Forces of the Crown and their dependents who are suffering from any disease of the chest or related illnesses. Applications may include costs of Course fees and registration, Travel Costs, Books/materials, and other where appropriate.

2. Burrow Hill Healthcare Professional Training Grant
Grants of up to £2,000 to assist in advancing the education of persons training to be healthcare professionals specializing in the treatment of chest diseases with a preference for those working with or intending to work with members or ex-members of the Armed Forces of the Crown. Applications may include costs of Course fees and registration, Travel Costs, Books/materials, and other where appropriate.

Asbestos-Related Disease Research Funding
The British Lung Foundation is offering funding to tackle research into asbestos related disease. Awards will be made over the course of 3 years, with one grant round intended per annum. Grants are available either to medically qualified applicants, post-doctoral scientists or allied health professionals for clinical, laboratory, qualitative, palliative care and/or epidemiological research into asbestos-related disease. Applicants must be based in the UK.
YEAR 2 – GRANTS AVAILABLE.
The British Lung Foundation requests proposals aimed at improving outcomes or the quality of life of individuals with asbestos-related disease.The BLF’s Asbestos-related Diseases Advisory Group has selected four priority areas for funding in the 2nd year of this scheme. We have £850k available to fund work that focuses on one or more of the following priority areas:
(i) a stratified medicine approach based on targeting therapy on the molecular basis of asbestos-related diseases or biomarkers.
(ii) collaborations with pharmaceutical companies to develop new therapeutic agents for asbestos-related diseases.
(iii) collaborative projects that involve other organisations and/or funding bodies outside the UK (including clinical, laboratory and/or epidemiological research). (Please note that the BLF cannot fund research institutions outside of the UK. A principal investigator must therefore be based at a UK institution, although co-applicants can be based abroad).
(iv) novel approaches to support or palliative care for individuals with asbestos-related disease.
Awards available:
Pump-priming grants
Maximum funding per award: £25,000
Award duration: 1-3 years
Aim of award: To fund smaller research projects with direct benefit to patients, or to fund ‘proof of concept’ studies which will facilitate larger studies.

Project Grants
Maximum funding per award: £200,000
Award duration: Up to 3 years
Aim of award: To fund established research teams carrying out research into asbestos-related disease for up to 3 years. Applications seeking the maximum amount/duration are welcomed as are those seeking smaller amounts of funding/shorter duration.

PhD Studentships
Maximum funding per award: £100,000
Maximum award duration: 3 years
Target applicants: Junior researchers
Aim of award: To fund PhD students studying asbestos-related research.
Awards will cover student stipend (as set by host institution), university fees (as set by host institution) and research consumables, directly attributable to the project, usually less then £12,000 per year. Total award for 3 years cannot be greater than £100,000.

Travel awards
The British Lung Foundation offers travel awards to the European Respiratory Society and American Thoracic Society Congresses, sponsored by Allen and Hanburys. The travel awards are available to junior clinical and non-clinical researchers in the respiratory field and contribute towards the costs of registration, accommodation and travel to assist in the attendance of these important meetings.
European Respiratory Society
ALLEN & HANBURYS AWARDS
Ten Travel Fellowships worth £750 each are available for young clinical and non-clinical researchers in the respiratory field to attend the European Respiratory Society International Conference in Amsterdam, 24-28 September 2011.
In addition, the British Lung Foundation is administrating two ERS travel fellowships on behalf of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society (BPRS). These awards of £750 each are available to scientists who have been a member of the BPRS for a minimum of 12 months.
Application Deadline: 15 July 2011.
Funding decisions will be made known to all applicants in early September 2011.
NAPP AWARDS
In addition, six Travel Fellowships worth £750 each are available for young clinical and non-clinical researchers in the respiratory field to attend the European Respiratory Society International Conference in Amsterdam, 24-28 September 2011, sponsored by Napp Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

American Thoracic Society
Ten Travel Fellowships worth £750 each are available for young clinical and non-clinical researchers in the respiratory field to attend the American Thoracic Society International Conference in Denver, Colorado, USA 13-18 May 2011.
In addition, the British Lung Foundation is administrating two ATS travel fellowships on behalf of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society (BPRS). These awards of £750 each are available to scientists who have been a member of the BPRS for a minimum of 12 months.

Young Investigator of the Year Awards
One award of £800 is being offered by the British Lung Foundation. A runner-up prize of £200 will also be available. Both prizes are designed to help the careers of the most promising young investigators carrying out original research in respiratory medicine and respiratory science during the past year.
A selection committee judges the awards based on abstracts presented at the British Thoracic Society Winter Meeting. More information can be found at the British Thoracic Society website.
