If there is not currently a Chronic Respiratory Disease Exercise Instructor in your area, don’t let this stop you exercising.
You’ll be surprised what you can do in and around your own home to exercise safely. With guidance from your Healthcare Professional and using key resources, you can find creative ways to keep active.
Your Personal Best
Your Personal Best is a national awareness campaign developed and funded by GlaxoSmithKline, official laboratory services provider for London 2012, in association with NHS London and supported by the British Lung Foundation. Its aim is to inspire the 7.78 million people over 55 with long term health conditions to lead a more active lifestyle thereby making a significant difference to their health, wellbeing and symptoms.
Get inspiration from BLF Wales' Margaret Barnard, who exercises 3 times a week by going to the gym, walking on the beach and gardening.
You too can achieve Your Personal Best by using the information, resources and Q&As with healthcare professionals at www.yourpersonalbestcampaign.co.uk
BLF Exercise Handbook
If you have been given one from your Healthcare Professional, use the information in you BLF Exercise Handbook to help you do exercises in your own home.
Community exercise
There are a growing number of community-based exercise classes, such as Ballroom Dancing and Water Aerobics. These will be advertised in local gyms, community centres, GP surgeries, newsagents and of course on the internet.
People with lung conditions find walking is a great way to keep fit and socialise. Visit your local woodland or find out about volunteer-lead walks in your area.
With other people, exercising is more fun, sociable and motivating.
Always get referred
Whether you have been through Pulmonary Rehabilitation or not, if something like this takes your fancy you must always consult your healthcare professional beforehand. You can then be sure you give the appropriate information to the class instructor so that they are fully aware of your lung condition.
What do you do to exercise?
To provide more information for people with lung conditions about exercise, we'd like to hear from you! Tell us about what exercise you do in your community: If you, someone you're close to or someone you care for has a lung condition, please feel free to take part in our online survey about exercise
