More about the group

River Trip to Greenwich

HMS BelfastThe group took a boat trip to from Westminster Pier to Greenwich. The Dunkirk Spirit prevailed despite all the rain on the day and the group still enjoyed the lovely views from the boat, as pictured on the right (with London Bridge and HMS Belfast in the background)h. While some members of the group remained on the boat, others got off at Greenwich to look around the shops and the street market, to have lunch at a restaurant and to visit the National Maritime Museum, all the while bracing the rain. Members, family and friends who came along on the trip all agreed they had had a fantastic day and thanked the committee for organising it all.

Mossman Museum Trip

Mossman MuseumThe group was treated to an outing by the Levenfiche Foundation. The charity provided the mini bus free of charge, as well as generously paying for lunch and the introductory talk at the Mossman Museum! This was the second time the group was given the opportunity with the foundation and all the members are really grateful to them! Having learned about the background of the museum, everyone was able to take a look at horse-drawn carriages as well as taking in archaeological and historical exhibitions about the area. Having had a nice lunch in the museum café, the group set off to explore the themed gardens, such as the herb, the knot and the Dig for Victory garden. It was a great day out by all and the group highly recommends it!

Brilliant Speakers

Beefeater MickThe group has been really lucky with its speakers. One very popular one was Mick, a now retired Yeomen Warden at the Tower of London, who previously worked in the armed forces. As a guard he acted not only as a guide, but was also a tourist attraction in his own right. He entertained everyone with anecdotes and tales from the Tower. In the picture he is showing off his everyday and his ceremonial uniforms.

The group is extrememly grateful for Mick to give his talk and would also like to thank the other fabulous speakers listed below:

  • Rama Vanchewaran
a respiratory consultant from Barnet, who talked about and answered questions regarding COPD and Interstitial Lung Disease
  • Ruth Sheer
who talked about her upbringing in Colonial Africa
  • Michael Worms
a local historian, who talked about Sir Stamford Raffles and his connections to Barnet
