Grant Award to Support Power of Music Sessions
The Breathe Easy Barking & Dagenham Group was awarded a £2,670 grant for 'improving mental and physical health' from the Evening Standard's Dispossessed Fund. The Fund was set up to fight the causes of poverty in the London capital and has already raised £5 million from individual and government donations. The grant will be used to fund 15 monthly 'power of music' sessions to help members exercise the lungs and improve breathing.
Group Raise Lung Awareness in Barking
As part of Breathe Easy Week, members of Breathe Easy Barking & Dagenham held an awareness stand in Vicarage Field Shopping Centre, where lung-testing was offered. The stand was a great success, with a great number of people having their lungs tested and picking up information on the different lung diseases.
Local Awareness and Lung-Function testing Days
Breathe Easy Barking and Dagenham have recently received a grant in order to 
carry out around 20 lung-health awareness events within a year, since levels of the lung condition COPD are very high in the area (more detail can be seen in the 'Invisible Lives Report').
Members of the group have been working with our local respiratory team to put on information stands, also offering lung-function tests to the public. This not only offers people a chance to check out their lung health but is a great way to get into conversation with them about issues they may be concerned about and to talk about the Breathe Easy Group.
In the photo opposite, Joe Hawkins, June Johnson and Rita Roberts can be seen at one of the awareness days. On this particular day, 30 people had their lung-function tested.
