More about the Group
Our group was formed in August 2010 the membership has grown through referrals from the Pulmonary Team. We now number 28 including some carers who have also joined and there is a possible 4 others joining when their rehabilitation course finishes. The group was given a good financial start by being presented with a cheque for £2,157.10p raised during the COPD awareness day on 19th August 2010. A Further £3,000.00 was donated by the Nat West Bank after customers voted for our group as a worthwhile charity. A local Masonic Lodge also donated £200.
In September 2011 we attended a networking day at The Castleton Centre, were we were delighted to be told that we had won a regional award in the category of “Outstanding New Group”. It was a fitting tribute to the hard work put in by our Treasurer Susan Magee, Stan Foulds our chairman, Margaret Beesley from the pulmonary team and all the hard working members who are by giving their time and energy are making our team successful. We all have problems but by supporting each other and having social contact, our quality of life is enhanced.
In August we got the news that we could take over a local allotment and so applied for ‘An awards for all’ Lottery Grant which we are pleased to say we have been awarded just over £8,500. This will be used to enable a disabled toilet to be erected on our allotment site for the use of all our members and those visiting the site. Our secretary had a meeting with the treasurer of the allotments committee and was advised that they would be having an “Open day” in the summer. They are going to have fund raising stalls, raffles etc. and that the amount raised would be split equally between our group and the BLF. This was in recognition of our input in getting the grant for the toilet facilities.
The regional team would like to say thank you to all the members of the Blackburn with Darwen group in continuing to support the work of the group. ‘A big well done’ in being awarded this grant and we hope you have many happy years working in the allotment.
