Study of babies and children who need oxygen at home
Dr Ian Balfour-Lynn, Imperial College London
Many children with a lung condition are treated at home and require extra oxygen. Surprisingly, very little information exists regarding these children and their treatment - it isn't even known how many children in the UK are on oxygen at home. Dr Balfour-Lynn and his team aim to find out more about these children and the oxygen they receive.
In February 2006, the way in which oxygen is delivered to people at home changed in England and Wales. This change in administration is being used by Dr Balfour-Lynn in his research. Copies of all oxygen order forms for children will be forwarded to Dr Balfour-Lynn's team. This will enable them to collect information regarding the oxygen needs of all children in England and Wales.
This information will be vital in ensuring that children are receiving the best treatment possible and will highlight any changes thatare necessary.
