How does influenza affect our defences against other lung infections?

Dr Helen Marriott, Post Doctoral Research Associate, University of Sheffield

The most common cause of flu is a virus called the 'Influenza A Virus' or 'IAV'. Although most people recover from 'flu within a few days, thousands of

people die each year from pneumonia that develops as a consequence of the virus. Effective treatments against IAV infection, which would also protect people from the risk of developing pneumonia, do not exist.

Scientists know that cells in our immune system called 'macrophages' are responsible for protecting us against infection. However, little is known about how macrophages handle infection with IAV. Dr Marriott will study the way in which macrophages interact with the virus to develop new ways to enhance our body’s defence mechanisms so that the virus is dealt with effectively and quickly.
