Can we make it easier for COPD patients to look after themselves at home?

Dr Sally Singh, Consultant Clinical Scientist, Professor of Pulmonary & Cardiac Rehabilitation University of Leicester

COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This is a term used for a number of conditions; including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD leads to damaged airways in the lungs. The word ‘chronic’ means that the problem is long term.

A programme of physical exercise and education known as 'pulmonary rehabilitation' (PR) can greatly increase quality of life for people living with COPD. These programmes are usually run by properly trained professionals in a hospital. Only a small fraction (currently around two per cent) of people who could benefit from PR currently have access to a scheme.

Dr Singh and her team are testing a 'self-management' programme which patients would be able to undertake at home. If this programme is seen to have benefits comparable to traditional PR it could be rolled out nationwide to provide essential treatment for the estimated three million people with COPD.
