Westminster scare shows need for vigilance says BLF

A report by health and safety consultants found that people working at the Palace of Westminster were at risk of exposure to asbestos, according to the Guardian newspaper.

The use of asbestos as an insulating material in the building has been previously acknowledged. The House of Commons say that the problems have been addressed.

“This report shows that older buildings in the UK may still contain asbestos and that householders, workers and maintenance staff should be aware of its dangers and how to deal with it safely,” says Dr Keith Prowse, Chairman of the British Lung Foundation. “Exposure to asbestos can cause a type of cancer caused Mesothelioma, which as yet has no cure and kills around 2,000 people a year in the UK.It is vital that we are asbestos aware.”
