Rise of TB reflects lack of research says British Lung Foundation

25/03/08

A case of the drug resistant strain of tuberculosis was confirmed in Glasgow on Friday.

Doctors are treating a Somalian man at a Glasgow hospital, who is being kept in isolation, for the drug resistant strain of TB, XDR-TB.

TB is a disease of the lungs but can attack other parts of the body and can be fatal in many cases.

The XDR-TB strain is said to be prevalent in other parts of the World including parts of Africa and Asia.

'The XDR-TB strain is of growing concern around the world but there is no evidence yet that there is a problem in the UK' says Dr John Moore Gillon, Vice President of The British Lung Foundation.

'However, TB is generally on the rise in the UK, mirroring the increase of TB globally, and this reflects the lack of investment in TB research in the last few decades."
