The British Lung Foundation has teamed up with Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS & The Mirror of Time exhibition at The O2 bubble in London to provide visitors with free lung function tests so they can discover their lung age to mark World COPD Day on Wednesday 19th November.
The event which takes place between 10am and 4pm will aim to raise awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which includes a number of conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD affects more than 3.7 million people in the UK, yet more than two million of those are undiagnosed. The condition is both preventable and treatable but early diagnosis and treatment is essential to slow the progression of the illness.
Kath Leach, British Lung Foundation spokesperson said: “By having a free lung function test visitors to BODY WORLDS & The Mirror of Time can be screened for early signs of lung conditions such as COPD and they can also find out their lung age. We would urge visitors to the exhibition to come along and see us particularly if they are a current or ex-smokers or have symptoms such as a persistent cough, breathing problems, a wheezy chest, and recurrent chest infections”.
BODY WORLDS & The Mirror of Time will be showing at The O2 bubble in London, until August 2009 and features a special presentation on the human life cycle and ageing showing the complexity, resilience, and vulnerability of the human body through anatomical studies of the body in distress, disease, and optimal health.
It features more than 200 plastinatesspecimens preserved through Plastination, the remarkable scientific process invented and perfected by Dr. von Hagens.
The respiratory gallery presents a fascinating collection of whole body plastinates, body slices and organs in both healthy and diseased states, powerfully demonstrating the effects of ageing and lifestyle choices on the respiratory system.
