To mark this year’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the UK Lung Cancer Coalition, of which the British Lung Foundation is a founding member, has put forward a 12-point plan to help double lung cancer survival.
Development of screening, greater funding for research, earlier diagnosis and equal access to care for all people in the UK are among some of the calls to action announced in the first-ever UK Lung Cancer Plan.
Lung cancer is by far the UK’s biggest cancer killer, claiming the lives of more than 33,500 people a year. Yet despite causing more deaths than leukaemia, breast, bladder and prostate cancer combined, lung cancer receives just four percent of all money spent on cancer research in this country.
This year’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month is also being supported by ex-England footballer Gary Lineker. At an event at Tottenham Hotspurs FC earlier in the month, he highlighted that the ground’s capacity of 37,000 almost equaled the number of people diagnosed with lung cancer every year.
Early diagnosis can save lives so if you or someone you know is concerned, call the BLF helpline on 08458 505020 to talk to a trained advisor who can also send you a free BLF booklet on lung cancer.
