Thousands of miners in the UK have developed serious lung problems as a result of their work. In 1998, the Department of Trade and Industry settled a 7.5 billion compensation fund for miners affected by COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The British Lung Foundation supported this move and both our President, Dr John Moore-Gillon and former Chairman, Dr Mark Britton, prominent respiratory specialists, were involved.
The BLF has the expertise and knowledge to help all those benefiting from this fund. We can help with ongoing support, advice and information on how to live with long-term lung disease. In addition we are proposing the following as specific benefits and services for miners and their families:
- A Miners COPD Helpline (this will complement our existing helpline). A respiratory nurse specialist will answer enquiries on COPD and the latest developments in diagnosis, treatment, management techniques and research. Callers will also have access to information on welfare benefits and local support networks
- A resource and information pack on living with COPD
- A resource and information pack for healthcare professionals
- A dedicated section on the BLF website for carers
- A dedicated tribute fund set up by the families and friends in memory of their loved one
- Access to the Breathe Easy network. This is a UK-wide support group run by and for people affected by lung disease. The network offers information, advice and support.
The BLF is also proposing to ring-fence money within its general research fund to improve the understanding, treatment and management of COPD.
Through supporting the BLF Miners COPD Fund firms and individuals will be making a valuable contribution to the long-term well being of those affected by COPD. They will also be helping the BLF to reach a long-term aim: to introduce ways of preventing people from developing COPD and, ultimately, to find a cure.
