Walking Dave’s 17 mile trek

Dave Taylor

Staying physically active is vital for everyone - but for anyone living with a lung condition, even daily tasks such as putting the kettle on can seem like mountainous effort. Research has shown that exercise is one of the best management tools for lung conditions; and it is therefore essential that everyone does all they can to help themselves.

Dave Taylor, a 70 year old Breathe Easy Chepstow member, is determined to take control of his condition, and go that “extra mile” – an extra 16, in fact.

On the 30th May 2012, Dave will be walking 17 miles from Newport to Chepstow for the British Lung Foundation.

At the age of 18, Dave had an abscess on his left lung. At the age of 56 he suffered pneumonia and had an abscess on his right lung. Today, Dave lives with a largely unrecognised lung condition called Bronchiectasis, and Pseudomonas – a bacteria that affects the lungs.

We would like to wish Dave every success in his preparation for this challenge & good luck for the day!

Dave is supported by:

Staff at the Chest Clinic, St Woolos Hospital, Newport

Staff at Chepstow Leisure Centre

Staff at Mount Pleasant Practice Chepstow

Run, jump and have fun - family's fundraising in memory of Derek.

Mrs Millington and family present cheque to BLF WalesA North Wales family has presented £4500 to the British Lung Foundation Wales, in memory of a much-loved husband, father and grandfather – Derek Millington of Holywell.

Derek's daughter, Julie, organised a fundraising parachute jump from 10,000 feet. Gareth Millington, Derek’s son, raised money by running the Chester half-marathon. And the family also organised a fun day at the Lighthouse Inn in Talacre.

Irene, Derek's widow, and her family presented their donation to Chris Mulholland, Head of British Lung Foundation Wales, at a special dinner in St Asaph on Monday 25 October, which was Derek’s birthday.

Irene said: "The reason I chose the British Lung Foundation was because I saw Derek suffer for so long. Attending the Breathe Easy Group with him made me realise just how many people suffered from COPD and we knew there wasn’t enough funding to help people with lung conditions. The fundraising has also been a lifesaver for me, keeping me busy and focused"
