Asbestos – Take 5 and Stay Alive

take 5 photo.jpg

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that became a popular building material in the 1950s. It is still found in many buildings, including hospitals, schools and homes.

A survey commissioned by the British Lung Foundation has found that 73% of people in Wales are unable to identify asbestos around the home.

Asbestos-related illnesses kills twice as many people than road accidents each year in Britain. Asbestos is the cause of over 90% of cases of mesothelioma – a form of lung cancer which is projected to peak amongst males in 2016

The British Lung Foundation launched its “Take 5 and Stay Alive” campaign, offering asbestos facts, advice on identifying asbestos and its safe removal.

Smoking in cars Child smoking in a car

Wales was the first country in the UK to vote for a ban on smoking in public places, and the first to stand up for the rights of the child through introducing a Children’s Commissioner. Both these measures drew support from all the political parties in Wales. Wales now has

a great opportunity to take a big step forward to improve the health of our future generations.

Where Wales leads, let others follow

The BLF is calling for action to stop smoking in cars carrying children as part of our Children’s Charter. In Wales, we are campaigning for the Welsh Government to introduce legislation, following its behavioural change campaign – “Fresh Start Wales”.

Not only do 83% of Welsh adults support a ban – evidence from Canada demonstrates that a ban is far more effective than a stand-alone awareness campaign.

The British Lung Foundation is calling on the Welsh Government to protect Children’s health and band smoking in cars sooner rather than later.
